The Crucial Step in Pool Maintenance

The most essential aspect of pool maintenance is regularly testing and maintaining the water. This is crucial when it comes to ensuring a safe swimming environment. Failure to do so can lead to bacterial and algae growth, which is dangerous to human health and can also lead to degradation of the pool itself.

Pools have been linked to various illnesses, especially bacteria related diseases, usually caused by neglected or incorrectly maintained water. You can easily avoid these issues by hiring our trained pool water testing professionals at Cessnock Pool Shop. We will come out and perform on-site water testing to ensure chemicals are in the right balance and your water’s Ph is at the right level. We can also add more chemicals if needed and help you fix any issues that may have arisen before they become big problems, preventing you from safely enjoying your pool.

There are many aspects involved in maintaining your water levels. The main issues that must be addressed regularly are pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and chlorine. Your water conditioner, or cyanuric acid, should also be checked. Each of these chemicals works with each other to create sparkling clear water that is ready for swimming. If any of these elements are off during testing, additional chemicals can be added to restore things.

Essential Elements of Water Testing

  • pH: When we talk about pH, we are talking about the acidity of the water. Levels are measured on a scale of 1 to 14, with seven or “neutral” where you want your water to stay. Too acidic waters (levels 1-6) can irritate the skin and eyes. Low pH can affect how well the other chemicals are working and may even lead to cloudy, dirty water that isn’t safe for swimming. If pH and other variables are off simultaneously, this could also spell disaster for your pool’s equipment and pumps as a rough scale can form.

  • Alkalinity: This refers to the number of alkaline substances in the water. These are needed to keep your pH in check. More often than not, if your alkalinity is off, your pH will also be off. It can also damage metal equipment and tools such as ladders.

  • Calcium hardness: This is the hardness of your water. If calcium levels are too low, the water will leech calcium from pool plaster and similar materials. This can wear down your pool very quickly. If other levels are also off, you may wind up with a scaled pump, heater and other equipment.

  • Chlorine: Chlorine is the chemical that kills bacteria and other dangerous pathogens that could make you sick. It also destroys things like urine, faecal matter and sweat if they end up in the pool. You want to ensure your levels are just right so that it isn’t harmful to swim in and that you can handle the contaminants as they arise. This chemical will also keep algae growth at bay.

We provide on-site testing through our mobile services. We’ll ensure all your chemicals are at ideal levels to maintain water safety throughout the season.
